2 Weeks, 4 Draws

Apologies for the lack of updates over the last couple of weeks, things have been rather hectic here at ECC, but fortunately we can now bring you the much awaited round up from the last two weekends of cricket, and the last round-up of the season, since the Saturday League season has finished. That said, if anyone is playing in the end of season games, and especially in the Borough Tournament (Southgate, Enfield, Cockfosters and ECC), and you'd like to write a few words in the way of a round up, we'd be more than happy to publish it on the website and on Facebook.

Starting with the weekend of the 28th of August, the 1st XI travelled around to West London to take on an Osterley side who were at the right end of mid table. Bowling first, we were on the receiving end of some very positive batting, as the hosts managed to post a very competitive 270-6 from 55 overs. It was clear that the winning draw was the only realistic option, and Thanuj Perera was instrumental in us getting that, scoring a composed 80 to see us pick up 4 points. Wali Khan was also in the runs, as we ensured that our run rate was greater than the hosts. The 2nd XI meanwhile, hosted Uxbridge at Hydeside, and also elected to field first. Some inspired bowling from Archer Cornwall and Stav Elia ensured that we had 190 to chase, which looked to be achievable. Sadly the weather was the winner, with only 36 overs able to be bowled back at us, and it was disappointing that we were just 3 runs short of the winning draw total, despite the best efforts of Alan Barnard who was 45 not out. I can also confirm that the 3rd XI won their league this weekend, and will be applying for promotion to the County League for next season, however, I don't have any details, suffice to say that they beat Alexandra Park at home in a game that went down to the wire.

This weekend just gone (4th of September), the 1st XI hosted Pinner at Hydeside, and really should have come away with a win, after posting 260 from 51 overs, courtesy of the in-form Thanuj Perera (82), Wali Khan (64) and Tony Willett (62). Unfortunately, we weren't able to take the last Pinner wicket, despite having 9 overs at the final pair, and we had to settle for a 4 point winning draw. The 2nd made the trip around to Indian Gymkhana to face the recently crowned champions, and it wasn't hard to see why they'd won the league, fielding a number of batsmen who looked capable of scoring at will. In spite of the best efforts of Kyle Lawrence, Archer Cornwall and Stav Elia who between them did the bulk of the bowling, the home side racked up 274 in 54 overs, which effectively ended the game in terms of us winning. Some good bowling, and average batting meant that we couldn't even get the winning draw total, however some resolute defence from Kevin Lawrence and Arti 'The Artist' Manoharan ensured that we picked up a point. The 3rd XI meanwhile travelled to Wembley, and won by almost 200 runs, crashing 330 from just 34 overs, and then bowling out the hosts with ease in what proved to be an impressive way to celebrate last week's promotion.

There are a number of games still to play this season, including the Enfield mini-tournament, between Enfield, Cockfosters, Southgate and Edmonton, as well as some friendlies, so please let us know if you'd like to play.

Lastly, as I'm sure most of you know Ciaran Dodds, and Lauren Andrews are working very hard to put together a fundraising evening on the 25th of September from 7pm at the club. All money made will go to the cricket section, so please do your best to spread the word and bring along friends / family / neighbours / random strangers. Tickets are £5 for adults and £2.50 for under 12s, and this includes a buffet dinner. On that note as well, if anyone can help with the food (even if it's just bringing a dish or two of something), then please get in touch with Ciaran or Lauren. Finally, if you're not able to attend, please see Ciaran to buy a few raffle tickets, as the prizes really are a cut above what you'd normally expect in a raffle, and are well worth winning!

Club Fundraising Night - 25th September

Club Fundraising Night 2010

Just a quick update to let everyone know about our End of Season Fundraiser at the club, which is taking place on Saturday the 25th September from 7pm until late. All proceeds will go towards the club, and the night should prove to be a lot of fun. I know that Ciaran and Lauren have gone to a lot of trouble to organise things, so please do your best to come along and support their efforts and help to raise some money for the club.

Tickets are £5 for adults and £2.50 for under 12s, and there will be a buffet included in the price, as well as a bouncy castle, DJ and a number of excellent raffle prizes, kindly donated by Middlesex & Surrey Cricket Clubs, Saracens, Tottenham Hotspur, Nivia, Hannays, Boots, Candy Stand Sweet Shop and our very own Kevin Lawrence.

Hope to see you all there!

1st Team in Dramtic Late Win

Last weekend proved to be an excellent weekend for the top two teams, as the first team moved into second place with a dramatic win at home to Crouch End, whilst the 2nd XI kept their survival hopes alive with a win away at Harrow Town. Starting with the first team, losing the toss and batting first on an uncharacteristically tricky wicket, skipper Tim Beeden set the tone well with 35. After a breezy 50 from Thanuj Perera, we were looking good, but some quick wickets from the visitors meant that we had to settle for 217-8 from 52. Calthorpe started well, but some good bowling from Ciaran Dodds meant that wickets were falling regularly. At 150-8, the game seemed over, but Crouch End wouldn't lay down, and fought back hard - with the score on 216-9, and 2 runs needed to win, Dodds popped up again with his 6th wicket to ensure that we won by the smallest possible margin. Leaders Harrow St Marys can't be caught now, however we leapfrog MTSSC into second place, after they lost out against Wycombe House. The 2nd XI meanwhile travelled around to Harrow Town, and stand in skipper Kevin Lawrence won the toss and elected to put the hosts in. After a bright start, we began to struggle, and with Town on 115-2, things looked bleak. The last 8 wickets fell for just 65 runs, with veteran seamer Archer Cornwall picking up 4, and Lawrence also getting 4 with his off-spin. The run chase started slowly, but Alan Barnard, and Azid Sohoye steadied the ship with an impressive 100 run partnership, and some late hitting from Colin Bennett saw us home for the loss of 4 wickets.

Next week sees the 1st XI travel to Osterley, in what usually proves to be a tough game, whilst the 2nd XI take on Uxbridge at home in what is really another must-win fixture

As of later this season, ECC will be launcing a new clothing range from the well respected cricket clothing supplier Stuart Surridge (who also produce kit for a number of county sides). There will be further details on the club website in due course as we know more. If you need any more info about the new kit, please contact Alan Barnard or Aziz Sohoye.

Rain the Winner, as 2nds Slip Up

It was a disappointing weekend for the club, as the 1st XI got the best possible start against league Leaders Harrow St. Marys, reducing them to 86-6 before the rain came. Wali Khan picked up 3 wickets, Kyle Lawrence 2 and Ciaran Dodds 1. The 2nd XI slipped up at home against fellow strugglers Bessborough, after getting bowled out for 119, and then only managing to take 6 wickets, as the visitors chased down. The 3rd XI played out a draw at home in the gathering gloom, whilst all other games were rained off. The Sunday 1st XI lost out in a fairly close encounter with Osterley. Next week sees the 1st XI host Crouch End, whilst the 2nd XI travel to Harrow Town in what is now a must win game.

7th August 2010

Late Drama for the 1st XI

It was another weekend of contrasting fortunes for the 1st and 2nd XIs, with a win and a defeat. The 1st XI secured a memorable victory in difficult conditions at Glaxo, winning the toss, and putting the hosts into bat on what has to be one of the worst wickets many people have seen in this league. Despite a platinum duck, the hosts chipped away and scored a competitive 149 all out from 45 overs, with Wali Khan once again the pick of the ECC bowlers, taking an very impressive 7 wickets. In reply, our innings couldn't have started much worse, with a spate of wickets leaving us reeling at 50-6. Thanuj Perera looked to steady the ship with a battling 38, but he was run out in comical fashion to leave us staring down the barrel at 91-9. Some inspired batting from Ciaran Dodds, and skipper Kevin Lawrence followed with some big hitting and sensible shot selection, and the total was passed with 2 overs to spare, and more than a few heart flutters for the watching crowd, as at least 3 catches were spilled. The 2nd XI hosted a strong looking Harrow Town side, and couldn't post enough runs to challenge, as they were bowled out for 160. The visitors eased past our total with just 2 wickets down.

31st July 2010

1st XI Chase Down 307!

The weekend just gone proved to be a good weekend for the club, as the top 3 teams secured good results. The 1st XI hosted Birkbeck College, which want was really a game of two halves, with Birkbeck taking advantage of some pretty ragged fielding and bowling to post 307 from 46 overs, and seemingly put the game to bed. The Edmonton batsmen though had other ideas, and Chris Arul (92), Rohit Damadaran (84) and Adam Herron (47) ensured that we chased down with 4 wickets to spare, and 3 overs left for a memorable win, which seemed so unlikely at the innings break. The 2nd XI clung on for a well fought draw at local rivals Enfield, with Kevin Lawrence leading the resistance with some resolute batting. The 3rd XI eased past fellow promotion rivals Bessborough to increase their lead at the top of the table.

Next week sees the 1st XI travel to Glaxo, whilst the 2nd XI host Hornsey at Hydeside.

17th July 2010

1st XI Make It 3 from 3

The 1st XI continued their impressive run of form into the 3rd week this Saturday just gone, with a memorable win against fellow promotion chasers MTSSC. Losing the toss, and being put into bat for the second week running proved to be something of a blessing in disguise for stand in skipper Adam Herron (and the self proclaimed "Best Tosser in the League" Ciaran Dodds). Chris Arul led the way with an assured 79, whist Danny Hare continued his good form with the bat, contributing a hard-hitting 71, as we posted 275-9 from the full 55 overs. MTSSC seemed to be looking for the winning draw total of 226 from the start, and despite some hostile bowling from Wali Khan, wickets were hard to come by. Khan, who bowled all the way through the innings for his 5-98 started making some headway with the in-form Kyle Lawrence, who took 3 wickets, and the game was nicely in the balance. A late burst from Hare, and Khan saw us pick up the last wickets with just 6 balls left in the day - a fantastic effort all round. The 2nd XI didn't fare so well away to Kenton, who proved a bit too strong for us, but the 3rd XI had more success as they leapfrogged 1987 League leaders Old Actonians into first place. The 4th XI game went down to the last ball against Teddington, but unfortunately they were on the losing side, as they continue to struggle in their league. Sunday proved to be another excellent day in the Chess Valley League for our League XI, as they chased down 249 against Harrow Town with 5 wickets to spare. The Sunday Friendly XI took on Limers CC, and couldn't manage to chase down 284, despite Tony Kershaw (4-55) and Richard Hawkins (129 not out) starring with ball and bat.

Next week sees the 1st XI travel to Old Lyonians in another must-win game, as we look to continue our run of good form into a 4th week. Also a reminder that the Club BBQ will be this Friday the 23rd of July, with the Presidents Day 8-a-Side tournament from 1pm. Please do your best to come down and support the club.

The Edmonton CC club BBQ will be next Friday (23rd July) at the club. Food will be served from about 7pm onwards, whilst there will be cricket at the club from 1pm in the form of the Presidents Day 8-a-Side Tournament, which was so much fun last year.

Tickets for the BBQ are £2 for adults and £1 for kids, and food is extra (although it will be reasonably priced). Your ticket entitles you to entry into a draw for a hamper raffle, which will take place later in the evening.

Please spread the word, and invite along anyone else that might fancy a day out in the sunshine (hopefully), and a nice social evening.

10th July 2010

1st & 2nd XI Both Win

It was a fantastic weekend for the top two Saturday teams, as both of them secured victories against Wycombe House to strengthen their positions in their respective leagues. Starting with the 1st XI, who travelled round to Isleworth, and were put into bat on what looked to be a decent pitch. We were soon on top of the game, with Rohit Damadaran blasting his was to a very impressive maiden ECC century, finishing on 106. Further contributions from Danny Hare (40) and Adeel Saeed (42) ensured that we posted an impressive 294-6 from 50. In reply, we got the best possible start, with Wali Khan (4-42) taking 2 quick wickets, and some good bowling throughout the innings (most notably from Kyle Lawrence, who took 3-7 from 8 overs) ensured that we won by 184 runs. The 2nd XI also fared well at home, restricting Wycombe House to just 123 after putting them in on another decent Hydeside pitch. The wickets were shared between all 5 bowlers (Ash Perera, Andrew Thomas, Stav Elia, Arti Manoharan and Shen Palihavadana). In reply, we made somewhat hard work of the chase, with Dave Smith making a solid (and in his words 'gutsy') comeback innings holding things together. A late burst from Deven Pieris (47 not out) ensured that we got home with 4 wickets to spare, and move out of the relegation zone for the first time this season. The 3rd XI could only draw against Enfield, although they will gain some consolation that it was a 4 point draw. Skipper Linserd Miller was left to rue a number of dropped catches in what was a very high scoring game. The 4th XI slipped up again away to Brondesbury, whilst the 5th XI also struggled.

22nd June 2010

First XI Pick Up Comfortable Win

It was a very good weekend for the First XI, as both on Saturday and Sunday as they secured 2 victories. On Saturday, bowling first, we were able to restrict Pinner to just 171 from 51 overs, thanks in the most part to Wali Khan, who picked up 5-44, and Danny Hare and Ciaran Dodds, who picked up the other 5 wickets between them. The run chase was straightforward, and we eased home with 8 wickets and almost 20 overs to spare, with Rohit Damadaran (65 not out) and Adam Herron (53 not out) leading the way. The Saturday 2nd XI didn't fare as well, unfortunately, in spite of Safir Butt's 119, and 51 from Colin Bennett, our 265-4 wasn't enough, and Indian Gymkhana's strong batting line up chased down on what must have been an excellent batting pitch. Sunday saw the League XI pick up a win at home to Ealing, coasting home with 7 wickets in hand courtesy of Basil Akram's 81. The Friendly XI lost out to Clifton in a close game, Justin Benedetti posting 63 in our 215-9, whilst Tony Kershaw took 3-43 as the visitors chased down with 2 wickets to spare. Next week sees the Saturday 1st XI travel to Isleworth to play Wycombe House, whilst the 2nd XI host the same opponents at Hydeside.

Sports Evening 2010

Also, a reminder to everyone that we have our Edmonton Cricket Club Sports Evening at the club this coming Friday (9th July) 7pm. Anyone is welcome to come along, and you can have a go at as many sports / games as you fancy trying (with medals and certificates for the best performances). As it's mainly for fun, it's ideal for kids as well as adults, and we will have a selection of indoor games, outdoor sports plus BBQ food and the usual full bar service.

22nd June 2010

First XI So Close

The 1st XI had a Saturday to forget, as they hosted Osterley in the Middlesex Championship. Batting first, the visitors posted a daunting 291 from 50 overs, with Ciaran Dodds picking up 6 wickets, and Wali Khan 3. In reply, our batting just didn't get going, and we stuttered to a disappointing 121 all out. The 2nd XI picked up a well earned point against Harrow Town, thanks to 65 from Thanuj Perera. I don't have any details from the 3rd, 4th or 5th XI, or the Sunday games at the moment, but will post an update if I hear anything. Next Saturday sees the 1st XI travel to Pinner in the last of the first round of league games.

22nd June 2010

First XI So Close

The weekend just gone proved to be a good one for the 1st XI, who took on Crouch End, although with a bit of luck and one more wicket could have been even better. Being put into bat, we posted a respectable 219 all out in 54 overs, with Chris Arul and Adeel Saeed picking up half centuries. In reply, the hosts looked to be cruising, but 4 wickets from Danny Hare and 3 from Wali Khan ensure we took the winning draw points. The 2nd XI slipped up at home to Harrow Town in a disappointing game. Sunday saw the 1st XI take on United Warriors, and post 242-8, with Azid Sohoye scoring 81. The visitors were bowled out for 161 to complete an impressive win. The Sunday Friendly XI hosted Harrow on the Hill, and the visitors, batting first, scored 217-7, with Tony Kershaw taking 5-36. In reply, we won with 7 wickets in hand, with Micky Billson (64 not out), Alex Coxall (58) and Jack Aylott (47) in the runs. Next Saturday sees the 1st XI take on Osterley at home, in what should prove to be a close run game.

14th June 2010

2nd and 3rd XI Show the Way

The 1st XI were left frustrated against league leaders Harrow St Marys, as they drew their 5th game in a row, after failing to chase down the 244 runs that the visitors had set them. Bowling first, Hussein Shabbir (4-36) and Wali Khan (3-54) were the pick of our seamers, but nobody really got going with the bat, and we stuttered to 205-6 in 50 overs, with Adam Herron 41 not out at the end. The 2nd XI, in what might prove to be a crucial game in their season beat Besborough after Colin Bennett (100) and Stavros Elia (5 wickets) picked up a vital 10 points to keep them in touch at the foot of the table. The 3rd XI travelled to Perivale, and returned home with a win, thanks to wickets from Andrew Thomas, and Lesbourn Edwards, whilst the 4th and 5th XI had days to forget, losing out at home to North London and Alexandra Park respectively. The Sunday Friendly XI hosted Shakespear, and lost out after they'd set the visitors 159 to win, although Tony Barker chipped in with 4-30.

Next week sees the 1st XI travel to Crouch End, for what looks on paper to be a difficult game, whilst the 2nd XI look to make it 2 wins from two as they host Harrow Town.

5th June 2010

First Team Secure Winning Draw

The 1st XI secured a hard earned 4 points on Saturday, picking up a winning draw at home to Glaxo, thanks to some impressive batting from the top order. Posting 280 from 50 overs, David Hinnigan (87), Adeel Saeed (67), Danny Hare (52) and Hussein Shabbir (41) all contributed with the bat. Sadly in a rain affected second half, we only had 33 overs to try to take 10 Glaxo wickets, and could only manage 6, courtesy of 3 from Wali Khan, as the visitors finished on 150, 34 short of the winning draw target. The 2nd XI slipped up to Hornsey, being bowled out for a little over 100, and the hosts easing past our total without too many scares. The 3rd XI looked to have taken all the points against MTSSC at home, with Randy Noel and Lesbourn Edwards performing well with bat and ball respectively, but the visitors controversially came off for bad light with 9 wickets down. The 4th XI and 5th XI also failed to win away from home, despite some impressive batting from Yussuf Sohoye (47) and bowling from James Weir (6-46) for the 4th team. Sunday saw the 1st XI take on Ruislip Orientals, who posted 258-8, in reply, we could only manage 197 all out, with Errol Crawford and Ash Perera scoring 47 and 46 respectively. The Sunday Friendly XI played Barnet Bs, and posted an impressive 250-1, with Justin Benedetti and Richard Hawkins both scoring centuries. Our bowling proved too much for Barnet, as they slumped to 102 all out. Next week sees the 1st XI host league leaders Harrow St. Marys, in a game that should prove to be a very closely matched affair.

Also, a reminder to everyone that the club is holding a Sports Evening on Friday 9th of July from 7pm. For more details, please see the website, or the Facebook page - it should prove to be an excellent, fun evening, so why not come down and support the club.

Rain Washes Out All Saturday Fixtures

Not much to report this weekend just gone, I think that the title says it all... Just a reminder that we host Enfield in the Middlesex Twenty20 cup at home tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6pm, if anyone fancies coming along to see the 1st XI in action.

World Cup Football at ECC

I've been told by Pete Withers that the club will be showing all 3 of England's group games in the World Cup on the screens at the club. We're hoping to get a decent crowd along to cheer the side on, and Pete has confirmed that there will be free food laid on at half time in each of the games. A reminder that the games are as follows:

  • England vs. USA Sat 12 June 7.30ko
  • England vs. Algeria Fri 18 June 7.30ko
  • England vs. Slovenia Weds 23 June 3.00ko

We look forward to seeing as many of you down there as possible.

1st XI Settle for a Draw

The 1st XI had to settle for another draw this weekend just gone, after being set an imposing 273 by Old Lyonians. Whilst our bowlers didn't bowl badly, the visitors batted well, and took advantage of any loose deliveries. Ciaran Dodds, Kevin Lawrence, Danny Hare and Wali Khan were the main bowlers used, and the wickets were shared fairly evenly. In reply, despite the best efforts of David Hinnigan, who scored an assured 88 at the top of the order, we were never quite in the reckoning. Adan Herron provided some late order fireworks however, crashing 49 not out to ensure we didn't lose. Meanwhile, it was a poor day for the other teams, with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th XI all losing out to strong opposition in the respective leagues.

Next week sees the 1st XI travel to newly promoted Birkbeck College, whilst the 2nd XI host near-neighbours Enfield. Monday also sees Edmonton participating in the Enfield 6-a-side tournament, starting at 1pm. I'm told their bar will be open all of the day, so it would be good if we can get a few supporters down to cheer us on.

1st XI Secure Winning Draw

Last weekend proved to be a decent enough weekend for the club, with the 1st XI securing a winning draw away to MTSSC thanks in the main to Danny Hare's all-round contribution (5 wickets and 40 runs), as well as some solid bowling from Wali Khan, Ciaran Dodds and Kevin Lawrence. The 2nd XI continued to struggle, losing out to Kenton at home, whilst the lower teams also didn't fare particularly well with the 4th XI and 5th XI slipping to defeats. Next week sees the 1st XI host Old Lyonians, whilst the 2nd XI take on Old Actonians in West London.

1st, 3rd & 4th XI All Secure Opening Wins

It's just going to be brief update this week, as I don't have all the scores in front of me yet. Starting with the 1st XI, who hosted Wycombe House in the Middlesex Championship Division 1, and were looking to get the season off the best possible start with 10 points. The visitors were limited to 241-8 from 50, with Ciaran Dodds picking up 4 wickets, and Wali Khan 2. In reply, Danny Hare (73) and Dave Hinnigan (60), shared a 120 run opening partnership to set us on our way, and Alan Barnard (58*) steadied the ship after a slight wobble to see us home with 2 overs to spare. The 2nd XI travelled to Isleworth to take on Wycombe House, and sadly couldn't match the 1st XI result, as they were bowled out for just 95, after being set 140 by the hosts. Captain Stavros Elia was the pick of the performers with 4 wickets. The 3rd XI took on Enfield in the 1987 League, and won fairly easily, whilst the 4th XI also secured a win. The 5th XI struggled against Twickenham, after being bowled out for 75, with Captain Andrew Cooper top scoring, but there were some promising performances from many of his young side. On Sunday, a weakened 1st XI took on MTSSC in the cup, and slipped to a comprehensive defeat, which wasn't unexpected. Next week sees the 1st XI take on MTSSC in the League, whilst the 2nd XI host Kenton at Hydeside.

Rain Dominates Second Weekend

It was pretty much rain all the way for the weekend just gone, with the 1st XI completing half a game against MTSSC in the Middlesex Cup, and the 2nd / 3rd XI completing the first innings of an inter-club game, both at home. The 1st XI had managed to restrict MTSSC to a below par 192, with Adam Lord and Wali Khan bowling very well at the top of the innings, and Danny Hare flying through his 9 overs for just 23 in the middle overs. Hussein Shabbir completed the wicket-taking, picking up 3 at the death, but the rain was the real winner, with only 4 overs of our innings able to be completed. The replay will be next Sunday the 9th May at home.

We will also be starting our league season next Saturday, with the 1st XI hosting Wycombe House after their drop into the Championship, whilst the 2nd XI travel to the same opponents. The 3rd, 4th and 5th XIs all start their 1987 League campaigns as well, with the 3rd XI taking on Enfield, the 4th XI Brondesbury at home, whilst the 5th XI travel to Twickenham.

Herron Dazzles With The Ball!

The first weekend of the season has been and gone, complete with weather more befitting of July. The top two Saturday XI's played out an entertaining 40 over practice match on the main square at Hydeside, which saw some excellent performances with both bat and ball. Batting first, Edmonton A posted 244 all out, with Adeel Saeed (78) and Hussein Shabbir (38) the main contributors. Adam Herron took off the wicketkeeping gloves to take an unlikely 6-34 with some impressive medium pace, bowling for the first time in recent memory. In reply, Jay Pandit and Sanjay Patel the Edmonton B openers shared a 150 run stand, and Dave Hinnigan also contributed 42 not out as Patel carried his bat to secure a win with 4 overs to spare, Stavros Elia picking up 3-42. The 3rd XI took on Expatriates on the small square, and posted 252-6, with Kazim Bacchus top scoring with an unbeaten 113, and Tam Zindane contributing 52. In reply, the visitors passed our score with 5 wickets down. Sunday saw the friendly XI taking on Maccabi, and posting 245-6, with Alan Lord scoring 73. In reply, the visitors could only manage 73, with Tony Barker and Tony Kershaw each picking up 3 wickets. Next week sees the 1st XI take on MTSSC at home in the Middlesex Cup, in a 1.30 start on Saturday, as well as a number of friendly games for other XIs. If anyone is available, and would like to play, please get in touch with Alan Porter.
